Skyscraper Squeeze: Precision Lift at Zions Bank

Skyscraper Squeeze: Precision Lift at Zions Bank

In downtown Salt Lake City, space is always at a premium — and the Zions Bank Headquarters project pushed that to the limit. Our team was tasked with placing an 800-ton Liebherr crane next to an active train line and above an underground parking garage, a setup that demanded careful planning and precision engineering. That exact placement created another challenge: the crane had to work at its minimum lifting distance due to construction happening across the street. Every move was calculated and deliberate to complete the necessary lift without incident.

The lift itself was no ordinary pick. We were tasked with removing two 25,000-pound boilers from a penthouse that was completely enclosed by walls. To make it possible, our jack-and-slide team removed a section of wall, then carefully slid the boilers out at a 45-degree angle. Once in position, the crane had to lift them straight up, threading them through a tight space between immovable steel bars — with no room for error. We then had to pick five cooling towers from on top of the roof with very little clearance since they were parallel with the crane.

What began as a near-impossible setup was completed safely and efficiently because every detail was planned and executed with precision. For our team, it was another example of turning complex challenges into successful outcomes — the kind of work we take pride in every day.
