Mountain Crane Supports Yellowstone Bridge Replacement

A major infrastructure milestone has been reached in Yellowstone National Park as the new Yellowstone River bridge now carries traffic across one of the park’s most critical corridors. With the new crossing officially open, crews have shifted focus to the final phase of the project: demolition of the original bridge.

Transitioning From Construction to Demolition

Located near Tower Junction along the Northeast Entrance Road, the multi-year project replaced a deteriorating bridge originally built in the 1960s. Crews are now carefully dismantling the original structure piece by piece, beginning with the concrete deck before removing steel and concrete support elements. The staged demolition process is designed to protect the surrounding river ecosystem while maintaining safety in the steep canyon terrain.

Supporting Complex Crane Operations

Working alongside RWL Construction, Mountain Crane has supported the project through complex lifting and rigging operations in one of the most challenging environments in the Mountain West. Heavy lifting on the project has included the use of the Liebherr LTM 1750, Liebherr LTM 1400 and Liebherr LTM 1110, helping crews safely complete critical picks in tight work areas.

Restoring the Landscape

In addition to the bridge replacement, the project also includes environmental restoration efforts throughout the surrounding corridor. Once demolition is complete, crews will restore sections of the former roadway, rehabilitate nearby wetlands, and return portions of Lost Creek to a more natural channel.

A Lasting Impact

Designed to serve visitors and surrounding communities for decades to come, the new Yellowstone River bridge represents a major investment in long-term infrastructure and environmental stewardship. Mountain Crane’s involvement highlights the important role heavy lift specialists play in both the construction and deconstruction of complex infrastructure projects.
